What is Morse Code Translator?

Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of dots (·) and dashes (−). Developed by Samuel Morse in 1836 for telegraph communication, each letter and number is represented by a unique combination of short and long signals. For example, SOS is ··· −−− ···. Morse code is still used in aviation, maritime communication, and amateur radio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the separator between Morse code letters?

A single space separates letters within a word. A forward slash (/) or three spaces separate words. For example, 'HELLO WORLD' is '···· · ·−·· ·−·· −−− / ·−− −−− ·−· ·−·· −··'.

Does Morse code support numbers and punctuation?

Yes. Numbers 0-9 each have a 5-character Morse code (e.g., 1 is ·−−−−). Common punctuation marks like period, comma, and question mark are also supported.

Is Morse code still used today?

Yes. Morse code is used in amateur radio (ham radio), aviation navigation beacons (NDB identifiers), maritime emergency signals, and assistive technology for people with disabilities. It remains a backup communication method in emergency situations.
